My First Published Book

Back in January 2011 I published my first book via the self publishing website blurb.com. It tracks the progress of my photography from when I first took it up as a hobby and follows all the way up until the time of writing it. Its a very personal and lighthearted bit of fun and you can preview some of the pages of the book here (click the fullscreen tab to maximise the use of this feature) or by clicking the link below you will be taken to the blurb store where you can even purchase it.

instagram latest

The images below were all published using the instagram app for iPhone. As work and trying to buy a house seem to be dominating my days and limiting my chance to do any serious photography at the moment, the iPhone still provides an escape to creativity so I thought I would share with you my favourite images I have captured recently.

Particular favourites being the downward looking shot of the golf shoes, cup and ball along with the image of the chimney at St Peters hospital Chertsey, check out that moody sky!

Location, Location, Location

Following on from my inspiring trip to the Sony World Photographic Exhibition at Somerset House, I decided to have a little play around in the garden taking various different portrait shots of Katherine (my fiance) as she was already wearing a camera friendly outfit. Trying out many different poses and set ups I became increasingly frustrated with the surroundings and backdrops that were limiting my creative vision and am now realising that in order to achieve many of the images that I have in my mind, I will have to make a more concerted effort to source and visit locations that can meet the high expectations I have set.

It is also possible that I am just not creative enough at the moment, not able to work with whatever environment I have at my disposal at that precise moment, this can be a flaw in my overall skills at times, but at the same time I believe that given the right scene, lighting and subject everything will fall into place so I can start to transform the canvas that is my mind into a physical work of art. At least in my eyes.

Below is the result of that little garden shoot which managed to produce this shot of which I am most pleased. Katherine looking like a moody 60′s movie star.

Instagram Gallery

This gallery is a selection of some of my favourite images taken with my iPhone and posted using the Instagram app. This free app is a fantastic little tool allowing you to  get creative and use one of the many preset themes to enhance the image. Since my phone is always with me it means I always have the opportunity to capture a great image or moment in time if I don’t happen to have my more professional cameras with me.  Just search ‘Instagram’ in the app store if you would like to add this to your iPhone, as I said its all free.

Happy Birthday

Hello again, it’s been a long time since my last confession, I mean blog update so as its my birthday today I thought I would share a gift with you all by posting this long awaited update, aren’t you lucky!!

Firstly what have I been upto? Photography related, not a lot really. I got quite into it over christmas messing around with various different projects but never really got round to sharing anything and then the laziness kicked in and I barely picked up the camera for a couple of months. Recently however the old bug has started to kick in again with inspiration coming from all angles and the change in the weather is an obvious clue. Springtime sprung and so did the enthusiasm. Although I haven’t been clicking away with regularity on my main cameras I have been getting creative and using the Instagram app on my iPhone to at least get the creative juices flowing before I really get stuck in again, fingers crossed.

Tomorrow there is apparently some big wedding happening, don’t know if you’ve heard, but that does not interest me in the slightest (and its not because they turned down my offer of being the official photographer) so instead I will be trying to avoid that crowd and will be attending World Photography Festival and Sony World Photography Awards Exhibitions at Somerset house which i’m sure will provide a considerable amount of inspiration as well as a chance to pick up some tips and reinforce some of the knowledge that I already have.

One image that I was pleased with, which was a project I had in mind for a while, was a self portrait of me looking like a well known South American revolutionary figure (You decide: Che or Fidel?). Once I had acquired the clothing and props I had in mind I set about trying to capture the image that I was after which is not particularly easy on your own. My idea once I had the image in the camera was to get an old used look through photoshop as if it had come right out of the cold war era and I am pretty pleased with the results (although I would have liked to light the cigar for added effect).

As I said earlier I used the Instagram app on my iPhone to get creative and you can see some of the results of that here in a selected gallery.

Wedding Photography – part 2

Apart from enjoying the celebrations and playing with my camera (also fighting with it as it decided to start falling apart, but thats another story) I was able to watch my friend and colleague Dave Tremayne as he took on the role of Professional Wedding Photographer for the day. Now wedding photography is one of the fields that I was less enthusiastic about when it came to my own interests, but this may just be due to the lack of self confidence I have suffered in the past and the thought of dealing with all the strangers and pressures of the big day. As with all things though, i’m sure if I did it once i’d be fine and could easily add weddings to my list of services I provide.

Dave and myself have spent many hours talking photography at work before, and I must credit him now as it was his enthusiasm that originally got me interested in photography in the first place, about 3 years ago encouraging me to get a DSLR and take it up as a hobby. Since then I have gone on to learn as much as I can from books, magazines and websites but hope to take a course next year to back up what I’ve already learned with all the theory and technical stuff, helped along and supported by a professional tutor.

It was interesting to see Dave go about his business at the Wedding in a very professional and unobtrusive manner. Blending into the background during the ceremony, organising the Bride, Groom and family for the group shots efficiently and then sneaking his way through the reception grabbing those all important candid shots. Its a side you don’t get to see of Dave much, totally in his element and enjoying himself, relaxed and getting paid for the privilege. Hopefully I can one day achieve the same level of satisfaction from a full time career in photography.

Until now I’d not really been able to see what a Wedding photographer goes through on a full day but having now witnessed and observed closely I’m not quite so negative towards the idea of one day giving it a go myself, however I still hope to pursue other fields more intensely such as getting commissioned for advertising or editorials purposes, sports photography or anything which involved travelling the world would be cool with me.

Wedding Photography – part 1

Following on from the stag night escapades of the previous week comes the inevitable Wedding. Having not been to any Wedding from start to finish since I was a kid it was gonna be a lesson to me in many ways.

  • Im Best Man at my best friends Wedding next year so get a glimpse into what its all about
  • Im getting married the year after so am able to see what i’ve let myself in for
  • I was able to watch my friend and work colleague go about his job for the day of being the professional Wedding Photographer

Firstly I’d just like to say congratulations to Mr & Mrs Paul & Hannah Ferguson whose big day it was. It was a beautiful ceremony and very enjoyable reception. I hope you had a wonderful experience and and continue to share a happy life together.

Now being a guest for the wedding I didn’t wish to bring my DSLR for the occasion but still wanted to try my hand at getting some stunning images of the happy couple whilst still trying to figure out and attune myself to the Lomo LC-A 35mm film camera that has barely left my side for the past few weeks. With this being a zone focus camera you have to set the focal distance with the lever on the front of the camera and can either manually set the aperture or leave it at automatic. To then get the correct focus for the shot you need to be pretty much the exact distance away from your subject corresponding to the setting you have chosen. As you can imagine this is not easy when there are about 20 other guests trying to get a shot of the Bride & Groom and to fill the frame of the Lomo they really need to be within 80cm or 1.5m. Anyway I did manage to get some lovely shots of them which I am very proud of and am beginning to see the fruits of this amazing little camera.

More shots from the Wedding and reception can be found here.

Carrying the Camera

Recently I decided to always, wherever possible, carry around with me at least a small compact camera (such as my Lomo LC-A) when i wasn’t out with the big DSLR monster so that I never missed a photo opportunity. This was a simple piece of advice given by lomokev in one of his books, when leaving the house always think keys, phone, wallet & camera. I have tried to take this on board with me as much as possible, taking my Lomo with me to work (the day job) as well as just popping out to the supermarket!

This has started to pay off with some interesting and creative shots I would normally be missing out on if I didn’t have a camera with me. I even took it with me to London recently for a stag night and despite the influence of alcohol was still sound of mind enough to get creative and achieve some interesting results. I shall now be definately carrying on in this vain and look forward to expanding my ever growing catalogue.

Below is just a few shots that i have managed to capture in the past couple of weeks simply by keeping a camera with me 24/7. More can be found on my flickr photostream.

New Inspirations, Same Old Faults

Today was a mixed day to say the least. I took in a trip to London today with my good friend and work crewmate David Tremayne to forget about the fact we are about to start a set of night shifts and explore some areas that we are not familiar with.

We set out mid-morning to avoid the early rush but still able to take advantage of some of that low autumn sun. Having not explored Camden much before I was excited about the possible Urban shots that I could come home with but despite having a renewed and amplified enthusiasm for my photography at the moment the same old faults started to appear through the cracks again.

I really enjoyed taking in the buzz and the vibe of the bustling Market town but, despite that, did not work with my cameras enough and bring back enough shots. I still suffer from the severe shyness and awkwardness to ask complete strangers if they mind having their photo taken, which is a real shame because there was a few characters their that would have made for some really interesting portraits. This is something where I am just gonna have to take a big brave leap since i’m sure most people would be fine with it, even if they are not, what would I have to lose! Dave on the other hand was the complete opposite and able to approach any bugger, but then he does have about 20 years experience over me!

Time just seemed to fly by on an enjoyable morning but the shots were just not building up. This is a common fault of mine also. There have been many occasions that I have gone out for the day with a camera and come back with much less than the effort of getting out there deserved. Perhaps I shouldn’t put myself under so much pressure and expect to come back with 200-300 shots to comb through at the end of the day. Perhaps the the key thing would be to go out with an idea in mind of what I want to capture rather than just wander aimlessly with the expectation of finding many interesting subjects or scenes to shoot.

The most disappointing thing today though was the gradual transformation from an urban photographer to a typical tourist taking photos. It’s something that we tried to avoid today but was perhaps inevitable as we eventually moved from Camden and instead walked from landmark to landmark along the bank of the Thames snapping away at every opportunity.

Despite all this though (and the drenching we received from the heavy afternoon rainfall), a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening day. I still have much to learn and improve upon, but thats gonna be the fun part I guess.

Lomography

Ah, the Lomo LC-A. What can i say about this little fella. I have only recently been introduced to both film photography and Lomography but i am starting to get hooked on both. This is – in the most part – down to lomokev (see my earlier blog) following my discovery of his work through his flickr profile and also his book ‘Hot Shots’. I love the images this little zone focus compact film camera produces from the great colour it catches down to the dreamy effect of the naturally produced vignetting effect. At the same time it still requires the photographer to apply all the technical attributes of photography and can be particularly unforgiving if time, effort and care is not applied when using it which I realise is still a challenge to me to get the perfect image first time round since I am so used to the ease and convenience of digital. But its a challenge I am enjoying taking on and learning from all the time.

I have just had my first roll of film processed and had a few images standout from them but I can see how much I have to concentrate when composing my shots and taking the light into consideration as the reject pile was particularly unimpressive. Below is a selection from my Lomography Set on flickr but you can click the link here to go straight to it.
